Take time for YOU!
Breast cancer is easiest to fight when doctors find it early.
"In our busy world we often do not take time for ourselves, and I cannot stress enough how important screening is in the fight against breast cancer," said Kathi Bouland, Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator for SwedishAmerican. "Prevention is the key to the cure. If we can catch breast cancer in its early stages, it can be cured."
- Know your risk. Some risk factors can be controlled, such as losing weight and quitting smoking. Others can't be helped, like whether breast cancer runs in the family.
- Be aware of your body. Look in the mirror each day when you step out of the shower, and call your doctor if you see abnormal changes. Know the feel of your breasts and where your natural lumps are. "There are many women that have fibrocystic disease and, at specific times of their menstrual cycle, will have additional swelling of these cystic areas," Bouland said. "Know this part of you!"
- Schedule your mammogram. SwedishAmerican offers walk-in mammography Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM – 2:00 PM at SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere and our Stateline Clinic in Roscoe on Monday 9:00 AM -3:00 PM and Tuesday through Friday 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM. SwedishAmerican's Breast Health Center in the Renaissance Pavilion offers mammograms by appointment Monday through Saturday.
"In your busy world, take the time to take care of you," Bouland said. "I have seen delay of action in busy women and men and because of this, it can be a difference between life and death. "This may seem simple but prevention is the key."
