Health Benefits of Chocolate
Finally, an excuse to indulge!
Today is National Chocolate Day, and we are particularly happy to celebrate it! Of course, you don’t have to wait for National Chocolate Day in order to enjoy a sweet. Studies show that dark chocolate has a host of health benefits.
The cacao plant is known for its high levels of antioxidants called flavanols – though that doesn’t give you a pass for an M&M free-for-all. Much of the processing that makes chocolate taste so good adds a lot of fat and sugar to the end product. Your best bet? A minimally-processed dark chocolate with few added ingredients.
What you’ll get in return:
- A lower risk of heart attack. A few squares of dark chocolate each day can lower your risk by up to 50 percent.
- Lower blood pressure and better arterial blood flow.
- More energy. Perhaps surprisingly, researchers have found chocolate can boost energy levels.
That’s all we need to hear – bring on the fondue!
