An annual gynecological exam is an important part of maintaining women’s health. It’s also an excellent opportunity to talk with your gynecologist about any issues you may be experiencing. Our providers specialize in women’s health and are experts at diagnosing and treating vaginal and urinary tract infections, endometriosis, ovarian cysts and other conditions unique to women. They can also offer guidance and education on family planning, contraceptives, pre-conception planning and infertility treatments. For women approaching menopause, it’s a good time to discuss menopausal management and find out whether hormone therapy is a good option for you.
We’re here to help you stay healthy! Regular screenings are crucial for identifying early signs of cancers and other conditions in the early stages when they are most successfully treated.
Pap Tests - The American Cancer Society recommends that women should get a Pap smear starting at age 21 and continuing every 3 years until age 65. Alternatively, women age 30 and older with a history of normal Pap test results can choose to have a Pap test combined with an HPV test every 5 years. However, women with high risk factors or those who have an abnormal test result should be screened more frequently. Your gynecologist can help you decide how often you should have this important test.
Mammograms - In general, it’s recommended that women age 50 and over get mammograms every two years. However, guidelines are continually changing, and your individual risk factors should weigh into how frequently you should have a mammogram. Talk with your gynecologist to find a schedule that’s right for you.
At Swedes, we make getting a mammogram as convenient for you as possible. Our Breast Health Center offers digital mammograms and breast ultrasounds. You can also walk into two of our facilities – with no appointment needed. Medical Center/Belvidere offers mammograms weekdays from 7:30 AM to 2 PM. Or visit our Stateline Clinic weekdays between 8:30 AM and 4 PM. Learn more about breast care.
Bone density test – As we age, we increase our risk for Osteoporosis. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends bone density screenings at the age of 65 or sooner if you break a bone after age 50 or have other risk factors. Talk to your gynecologist to find out what’s right for you.
