Heart Hospital Services
Heart Surgery and Heart Disease Treatment
From primary care to open heart surgery, SwedishAmerican’s range of cardiac services is truly comprehensive. Many of our cardiac services are offered at the Heart Hospital, while others are offered at the hospital, our many clinics or by SwedishAmerican Home Health Care.
The Heart Hospital offers patients a wide range of outpatient cardiac testing procedures. In addition to stress tests and vascular studies, they include echocardiograms and nuclear medicine testing.
Nuclear Medicine is used to check heart function and structure. After introducing a small amount of a radioactive substance into the patient's body, images of the heart are produced on a computer screen. At Swedes, our robotic technology produces clearer images and reduces testing times.
Echocardiogram is an ultrasound study of the heart that provides information on the pumping ability of the heart, abnormalities of heart valve function and chamber wall movement.
Located on the second floor of the Heart Hospital, our 30-bed coronary care unit provides state-of-the-art care to patients following surgery or traumatic injury.
Large, private rooms with soft colors and natural lighting help to create a quiet and relaxing environment. Patient rooms are designed to allow staff and family easy access to the patient while safely accommodating equipment needed for critical care. Additionally, each room has special amenities like built-in seating and Internet access for visiting family members. Patients are easily viewed from a central nurses' station that is only 8 feet away. This improves visual monitoring by the staff, as well as quicker response times.
Located on the third and fourth floors, the Heart Hospital's Cardiac Surveillance Units (CSUs) offer a soothing environment for healing with natural colors and indirect lighting. Large windows provide natural light and allow patients to see outside while lying flat in bed. Noise is kept to a minimum with angled hallways, separated care pods and acoustic ceiling tiles.
Beyond a soothing environment, patients and their families have access to a variety of amenities designed to make their time with us more comfortable, including a concierge service, flat screen TVs and DVD players in each room, window seats that convert to a bed, desks with Internet access, and a family seating area and solarium for getaway spots.
The Heart Hospital provides a holistic approach to care by recognizing that mind, body and spirit all play a part in the healing process. Patients are introduced to things like gentle yoga, journaling and acupressure as ways to reduce stress and anxiety. We also provide free in-room services like therapeutic massage, aromatherapy, soothing instrumental music with televised images of nature and guided imagery to support relaxation and encourage restfulness and sleep – all of which are very important to the healing process.
The concept of a healing environment extends beyond patient rooms. On the second, third, and fourth floors, patients and families have access to solariums that provide space for quiet reflection and relaxation. On the main level, a fountain and healing garden provide a respite from the hospital environment. The garden is wired for telemetry, so patients can be monitored while relaxing outdoors. A chapel also is available for meditation and worship.
The Heart Hospital at SwedishAmerican offers five digital cardiac catheterization labs for patients. These labs use the latest technology to diagnose and treat cardiovascular diseases. Treatments include angioplasties, stents, carotid stenting and endografts.
Our new Electrophysiology Lab is yet another state-of-the-art service that diagnose and treat problems with the heart's electrical system. EP studies allow doctors to diagnose causes of abnormal heart rhythms and identify the best treatment - medication, a pacemaker, defibrillator, or elimination of abnormal tissue.
At Swedes, we have new operating rooms devoted exclusively to open-heart surgery. Procedures performed in our surgical suites range from coronary artery bypass grafts and valvular procedures to Transmyocardial Revascularization (TMR), which is used to relieve severe angina or chest pain in very ill patients who aren't candidates for bypass surgery or angioplasty.
SwedishAmerican offers a three-phase, physician-prescribed cardiac rehabilitation program. Through exercise and education, our program is designed to improve the health and quality of life of patients with heart and vascular disease, including angina (chest pain), angioplasty, atherectomy, stent placement, heart attack, heart transplantation, open-heart surgery, peripheral arterial disease, high-risk individuals with multiple risk factors, arrhythmia patients, post-pacemaker patients and post-implantable defibrillator patients.
Cardiac rehab uses exercise and education to improve the recovery process and lower the risk of future cardiac problems.
The Heart Hospital offers ongoing health management through education. Patients receive daily educational classes as part of their cardiac rehabilitation. Education is provided by professionals that include a congestive heart failure coordinator, diabetic educator, cardiovascular coordinator and dietitian.
Patients also have access to an education center that includes online resources, books and visual aids with easily understandable information and easy-to-use tools. They can also use the Gloyd Learning Center. It’s a unique, interactive computerized learning tool positioned in the lobby of the Heart Hospital. This one-of-a-kind, six-by-nine-foot computerized touch-screen display provides a fun, "hands-on" educational opportunity to Heart Hospital visitors. Visitors and family members can interact with diagrams, videos and text to learn more about how the heart functions, ways to live a heart-healthy lifestyle, how to support the patient and more about the Heart Hospital itself. The Gloyd Learning Center was funded by a generous grant from the Gloyd Family Foundation.
