Certified physician assistants (PA-C) are healthcare professionals licensed to practice medicine under the supervision of a physician. To become certified, PAs must complete an accredited course of medical study and pass a certification exam administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). To maintain certification, PAs must complete 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years.
PAs practice in all areas of medicine including family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics,as well as in surgery and the surgical subspecialties. Working under the guidance of a physician, PAs conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive healthcare, assist in surgery, and prescribe medicine.
