ROCKFORD, Illinois – SwedishAmerican is pleased to welcome new orthopedic surgeon Dr. Mark Carlson to the Belvidere Clinic (1700 Henry Luckow Lane, Belvidere).

A native of Rockford, Dr. Carlson brings 33 years of experience to SwedishAmerican. He received his medical degree from Wake Forest Medical School and is a member of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and Arthroscopy Board of North America.

Dr. Carlson belongs to the Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Illinois State Medical Society, and has been a surgery instructor at University of Illinois. His special medical interests include back pain, fitness and exercise, health and wellness, nutrition, patient education, spine, sports medicine and weight loss.

“I developed an interest in medicine, and then specifically orthopedics, first through my personal interactions with Lundholm surgeon Don Lyddon, who successfully repaired my thumb injured in a high school hockey game,” Dr. Carlson said. “My interest grew as I played intercollegiate football, soccer, and hockey at Wake Forest, and I found my academic strengths were well-matched to my love of sports. When I entered medical school and rotated through the various specialties, I found my match in orthopedics.

“My focus is always placing patients first,” Dr. Carlson said. “I diagnose their problem, educate them about the natural history of their condition, and offer them reasoned solutions from which to choose.”
