SwedishAmerican Pharmacy Now Offering New Vaccine Program for Families of Newborns

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease that is known for uncontrollable, violent coughing, which often makes it hard to breathe. After fits of coughs, someone with pertussis often needs to take deep breaths that result in a “whooping” sound. Pertussis can affect people of all ages, but can be very serious, even deadly, for babies less than a year old.

It is standard of care that new moms receive a vaccine called Tdap, a combined tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis vaccine. This protects the mom and prevents the spread of pertussis to the newborn. However, fathers, family members and caregivers are often forgotten.

The SwedishAmerican Outpatient Pharmacy is now offering a unique program that allows this group of people (fathers, family members and caregivers) to receive the Tdap vaccine in addition to mom. Now, when a mom receives her vaccine in the hospital, staff educates family members and caregivers about the benefits of the vaccine. If the individual is agreeable to receiving the vaccine, the SwedishAmerican Outpatient Pharmacy staff can administer it on-site, avoiding a separate follow-up appointment at their physician’s office or a special trip to a busy retail pharmacy.

“Tetanus and Diphtheria are rare, but can kill one in ten people who are infected, even with receiving proper medical care,” says SwedishAmerican Pharmacy Director Tom Carey. “We are very excited to offer this program to family members and are pleased to offer this much needed service at a convenient location for all those in need of Tdap vaccination.”
