SwedishAmerican to Host Pause to Give Life Flag Raising Ceremony in Honor of Donate Life Month, April 2
The month of April is dedicated to encouraging Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors, and to celebrating those who have saved lives through the gift of donation. In 2016, more than 33,600 transplants brought renewed life to patients, however sadly 8,000 people die each year (22 people each day) because the organs they need are not donated in time.
To help kick-off the month, SwedishAmerican along with UW Organ and Tissue Donation, is hosting Pause to Give Life, a flag raising ceremony to honor and recognize local organ donors and their families, on Monday, April 2 at 10 AM near the southeast corner of SwedishAmerican Hospital. A short program will take place followed by a flag raising ceremony at 10:08 AM, to recognize that every ten minutes a new name is added to the list, and that a donor can save eight lives. We will then pause for one minute and 14 seconds, to recognize the hope that is needed for the 114,000 people on the national wait list. SwedishAmerican is one of many hospitals located across Illinois and Wisconsin to take part in this event.
“Honoring family members when their loved one donates the gift of life is one of the best things we, as nurses, can do to help relieve some of the pain,” says SwedishAmerican CCU Nurse and Organ Donation Committee Member Christiaan Letsinger. “When you see the organ donation flag flying, SwedishAmerican encourages you to take a moment to remember the grieving family and the great gifts that are given through donation.”
Directly following the flag raising ceremony, from 11 AM – 1 PM, SwedishAmerican’s organ donation team will host a donor registry event for its employees, patients and their family members in the Commons, fourth floor of the hospital. Local organ recipients will be in attendance to help greet people and tell their donation stories. Cake will be provided.
In 2017, SwedishAmerican Hospital had four organ donors with 12 lifesaving organs transplanted. Additionally, SwedishAmerican placed six organs for research. In just 2018 alone, SwedishAmerican has had one organ donor with four lifesaving organs transplanted.
