SwedishAmerican to Host Founder’s Week Activities, June 6 – 10

SwedishAmerican Hospital was founded on June 6, 1911. To celebrate and honor its 105th anniversary, SwedishAmerican, a division of UW Health, is hosting a week-long celebration, June 6 – 10.

On Monday, June 6, the hospital will kick off the week at 10:00 AM by announcing the winners of the Dr. Henry C. Anderson Quality Award. In 2002, SwedishAmerican developed the Dr. Henry C. Anderson Quality Award to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to improving healthcare quality. The award, bearing Dr. Anderson's name, reflects the values he brought to our organization: a commitment to excellence; sound judgment; principled leadership; and exceptional integrity. The SwedishAmerican Dr. Henry C. Anderson Quality Award is about instilling passion throughout the organization, and is our highest expression of distinction and appreciation.

On Monday, SwedishAmerican also will kick-off a peanut butter & jelly drive at 21 SwedishAmerican locations throughout the community. Why peanut butter and jelly? Peanut butter is a great source of protein, a shelf-stable food, and one jar of peanut butter and jelly can provide multiple meals to a child in need throughout the summer months. Donations will be accepted through Friday, June 17 and given to local food pantries throughout northern Illinois.

On Tuesday, June 7, SwedishAmerican will hold its 3rd annual employee wheelchair relay races from 12:00–1:00 PM near the Heart Hospital entrance. Employee teams, including two teams from senior leadership, will decorate their wheelchairs and race against each other in a fun and safe relay course. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest wheelchair team and best decorated wheelchair. Following the race, SwedishAmerican will present a check to the Rockford Park District Therapeutic Recreation Department.

Wednesday, June 8 is “Wellness Wednesday.” Employees are encouraged to walk with a “Walk on Wednesday” leader from senior leadership. The hope is that our employees continue to walk each Wednesday during the summer and early fall. Additionally, SwedishAmerican’s Wellness Committee will present a new Worksite Wellness award called the “Wellness Warrior.” The award will be presented to one SwedishAmerican employee at 10:00 AM in the Heart Hospital lobby.

On Thursday, June 9, SwedishAmerican’s Regional Cancer Center is holding a pavilion dedication in its meditation garden at 1:00 PM. The new pavilion will provide a space for patients and their families to enjoy during their journey to wellness. Thursday also is “Spirit Day,” when employees are encouraged to wear purple and show their SwedishAmerican pride.

Friday, June 10, will conclude the week with the SwedishAmerican Foundation’s annual Founder’s Day picnic for employees and volunteers from 11 AM–1:30 PM under the Big Top near Camelot Tower. A photo booth with fun props will be available for employees to enjoy. The picnic is hosted by the SwedishAmerican Foundation.

Lastly, SwedishAmerican is hosting a Swedes Selfie Sign Hunt throughout the entire week, June 6 – 10. SwedishAmerican’s Facebook page will post one clue per day, for five days, encouraging community members to go to a particular destination that is part of our history and take a selfie with the yard sign that's posted there. Participants will then post their photo on SwedishAmerican's Selfie Sign Hunt Facebook event page. They can also submit an entry on Instagram or Twitter by using hashtag #SwedesSelfieSignHunt or email the photo to selfiesignhunt@swedishamerican.org. The more photos you submit, the more chances you have to win! One community member and one SwedishAmerican employee will each win a $250 VISA card and have the opportunity to select a local charity to receive a $250 donation.
