SwedishAmerican to Host Events in April to Honor and Recognize Local Organ Donors
The month of April is dedicated to encouraging Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors, and to celebrating those who have saved lives through the gift of donation. There are more than 121 million registered donors in the United States, including 5.5 million people from the state of Illinois. Still, the number of people in need of transplants continues to rise. SwedishAmerican Hospital is celebrating all month long by hosting three events to honor and recognize local organ donors and SwedishAmerican’s nursing staff.
On Tuesday, April 5 at 1 PM, SwedishAmerican is hosting a flag raising ceremony to honor the lives of those who have given the selfless gift of organ, tissue and eye donation. This will be the first time the Donate Life flag will be raised outside the SwedishAmerican Heart Hospital. In the future, SwedishAmerican will hold a flag raising ceremony for family members when their loved one donates the gift of life. When you see the flag flying, SwedishAmerican encourages you to take a moment to remember the grieving family and the great gifts that are given through donation.
On Tuesday, April 12 from 11 AM – 1 PM, SwedishAmerican’s organ donation team is hosting a donor registry event for its employees in the Commons, on the fourth floor of the hospital. Local organ recipients will be in attendance to help greet people and tell their donation stories.
On Tuesday, April 19 at 11:30 AM, Secretary of State Jesse White will visit the hospital and host a brief program in the Healing Garden to honor SwedishAmerican’s nursing staff for all of their efforts in regards to organ donation, and to recognize local recipients and families of organ donors.
“We need to spread the word that donation changes lives every day,” says SwedishAmerican Vice President of Patient Services Ann Gantzer. “Each person has the power to donate life. We encourage individuals to become a donor and we thank those who have and will continue to save the lives of our patients.”
In 2015 SwedishAmerican Hospital had five organ donors with nine lifesaving organs transplanted into nine recipients. Additionally, SwedishAmerican placed nine organs for research. In just 2016 alone, SwedishAmerican already has had five organ donors.
