SwedishAmerican to Hold Hospital Evacuation Exercise in Partnership with Local Agencies

SwedishAmerican Hospital is conducting a large-scale hospital evacuation exercise on all patient floors in the hospital on Wednesday, September 21 from 9 AM – 1 PM. In addition to hospital personnel, exercise participants will include SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere, OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, Mercy Health, Rockford Fire Department, Rockford Mass Transit District, Metro Medical Services, OSF Lifeline Ambulance, Superior Ambulance, Northern Illinois Amateur Radio Emergency Services and local fire departments, including New Milford, Cherry Valley, Harlem-Roscoe, Byron and Rockton.

The purpose of the exercise is to test the SwedishAmerican Response Plan and assess the hospital's response to a potential catastrophic power and generator failure. The exercise will allow hospital staff to assess the number of patients in the facility, determine where extra capacity might be available in the Stateline and how to get patients safety relocated. During the exercise, individuals helping with the drill will evacuate community volunteers playing the roles of patients to area hospitals and nursing homes.

SwedishAmerican patients and visitors should not be affected by the drill. Hospital personnel will be available to assist and reroute guests to appropriate entrances if need be.

Questions regarding the exercise may be directed to Steve Kirschbaum, lead planner/exercise director, by calling (779) 696-6085.
