SwedishAmerican Foundation Hosts Swedish Nursing Students for Sixth Year in a Row
On Thursday, March 8, ten nursing students and three instructors from the De la Gardiegymnasiet upper secondary school in Lidköping, Sweden, will arrive in Rockford for a fourteen day visit. The students will do clinical work and shadow both nurses and physicians at SwedishAmerican Hospital and also learn about the Rockford community by participating in classes at Guilford High School, stay with local host families and visit the Swedish Historical Society´s Erlander Home Museum. This is the sixth year SwedishAmerican has hosted nursing students from Sweden.
The Swedish nursing students are mostly halfway through their nursing program and have an equivalent to a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or a nurse assistant. Students will get to shadow nurses and physicians all throughout the hospital from the emergency room, to labor and delivery and mother baby, to the Heart Hospital and several other areas of the hospital. The goal of the project is to explore a future exchange program within the healthcare occupation.
“We love when the Swedish nurses visit SwedishAmerican,” says SwedishAmerican Foundation Director Laura Wilkinson. “These young women and men learn so much about our healthcare system during the fourteen days they are here but in turn we also learn so much from them. It’s truly a mutually beneficial partnership.”
“The purpose of the nursing students’ visit to SwedishAmerican Hospital is to explore and expand international educational opportunities for our students at De la Gardiegymnasiet,” says Lidköping’s International Business Developer Linnea Bengtsson. “They will spend time observing several departments at the hospital, studying and learning American healthcare practices. We are highly interested in establishing future opportunities for our students to be able to perform parts of their practical work at SwedishAmerican.”
For the majority of the fourteen days, the Swedish nurses will be shadowing nurses and physicians at SwedishAmerican. Other key dates include:
• Monday, March 12 – Swedish nurses to watch Da Vinci surgery robot demonstration at SwedishAmerican Hospital.
• Tuesday, March 13 – Swedish nurses to attend a Rockford Ice Hogs game and meet the Swedish hockey players.
• Monday, March 19 – Swedish nurses to participate in Rockford City Council meeting.
• Tuesday, March 20 – SwedishAmerican Foundation to host reception for all Swedish nursing students and instructors at Forest Hills Country Club from 5 – 7:30 PM.
