SwedishAmerican Foundation Hosts Swedish Nursing Students for Fourth Year in a Row
On Thursday, September 22, eight nursing students and four instructors from the De la Gardiegymnasiet upper secondary school in Lidköping, Sweden, will arrive in Rockford for a fifteen-day visit. The students will do clinical work and shadow physicians at SwedishAmerican Hospital and also learn about the Rockford community by traveling to a local church, school and fire station. This is the fourth year SwedishAmerican has hosted nursing students from Sweden.
The Swedish nursing students are mostly halfway through their nursing program and have an equivalent to an LPN or a nurse assistant. Students will get to shadow nurses and physicians all throughout the hospital from the emergency room, to labor and delivery and mother baby, to the Heart Hospital and several other areas of the hospital. The goal of the project is to explore a future exchange program within the healthcare occupation.
“We are extremely excited to host the Swedish nurses for the next two weeks,” says SwedishAmerican Foundation Director Laura Wilkinson. “Their eyes really light up when they see how healthcare works in the United States. They learn so much and that’s the ultimate goal of this program.”
“The purpose of the nursing students’ visit to SwedishAmerican Hospital is to explore and expand international educational opportunities for our students at De la Gardiegymnasiet,” says Lidköping’s International Business Developer Linnea Bengtsson. “They will spend time observing several departments at the hospital, studying and learning American healthcare practices. We are highly interested in establishing future opportunities for our students to be able to perform parts of their practical work at SwedishAmerican.”
To celebrate and close out their trip, the SwedishAmerican Foundation is hosting a reception for all Swedish nursing students and instructors on Tuesday, October 4 from 5 – 7:30 PM at Forest Hills Country Club.
