SwedishAmerican Foundation Awards $12,000 Grant to Zion Outreach

The SwedishAmerican Foundation is pleased to announce it has awarded a $12,000 grant to Zion Outreach, an organization that partners with Angelic Organic Learning Center (AOLC) and Rockford Housing Authority (RHA) to provide sustainable food and micro-economic employment for the residents of Blackhawk Court, a site of the RHA. Zion Outreach is a subsidiary of Zion Lutheran Church, located at 925 Fifth Avenue in Rockford.

The grant money will be used to support community outreach in conjunction with the development of year-round, community-based farming at Blackhawk Courts Farm and Garden, an initiative through AOLC that allows children and residents to learn how to plant, tend and harvest a garden. Adults also have the opportunity to participate in cooking and nutrition classes which helps them to complete their community service hours.

Additionally, the funds will help underwrite program expenses and fund the Community Outreach Coordinator position whose goal is to recruit youth and adults, coordinate and deliver educational programs throughout the year, distribute food to the community, organize community events and help residents overcome barriers to participation and employment.

“SwedishAmerican is extremely proud to give $12,000 to a very deserving organization who is helping our neighbors overcome barriers and have access to healthy food,” says SwedishAmerican Foundation Director Laura Wilkinson. “SwedishAmerican’s main mission is to care for its community and we are doing just that by partnering with Zion Outreach and other organizations that lift up our neighborhood.”

The SwedishAmerican Foundation supports the healing mission of SwedishAmerican, to satisfy the philanthropic need of our community, and to nurture the organization’s rich Swedish history and tradition.
