SwedishAmerican to Co-Host 5th Annual Extrication Competition

On Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25, SwedishAmerican Hospital, Harlem Roscoe Fire Protection District, Erickson Auto Parts and Sales, and Auto Ex Vehicle Extrication Training will host 10 fire departments who will demonstrate their extrication skills (using hand tools and power tools, i.e., "Jaws of Life") in a competition to be held at Harlem Roscoe Fire Protection District, Station #3, 4919 Willowbrook Road in Roscoe. Teams are from Wisconsin and Illinois.

On Saturday, teams will participate in scenario based educational sessions at Erickson Auto Parts and Sales, 4917 Prairie Hill Road, Roscoe. Training will be held from 10 AM to 3 PM. Mike Huffman will be the coordinator on-site.

On Sunday, each fire department/rescue squad will compete in two scenarios in which they have 20 minutes to remove one victim (a mannequin) from a simulated severe collision. Each team consists of six members. In one scenario the team is only allowed to use hand tools. In the second scenario they are allowed to use the “heavy hydraulics” such as the Jaws of Life. Competitors are sequestered before they compete so they do not see the simulated accident until they arrive at the scene. All simulated collisions are taken from “real-life” situations.

Scenarios on Sunday will begin at 8:30 AM and continue until 4:30 PM. Scenarios will be set-up to run every 30 minutes throughout the day. There will be three trophies presented; one from a scenario using only hand tools, another from a scenario using power tools, and the third is the overall highest scoring team of the competition.

This event is FREE and open to the public. Many of the tool manufacturers will attend and demonstrate their products both days. For questions or more information, please contact Mike Huffman at (815) 988-7020.
