SwedishAmerican Awards $58,000 to Local Not-For-Profits
SwedishAmerican, a division of UW Health, is excited to announce it has awarded $58,000 in four grants to local not-for-profits through the SwedishAmerican Foundation. SwedishAmerican hosted a news conference today to announce the winners of its 3rd annual Caring for Our Community Grant.
The Caring for Our Community Grant was designed for not-for-profits that serve communities within SwedishAmerican’s service area. SwedishAmerican received 35 grant applications and awarded four grants, including:
- $20,000 to Awaken 815 to provide 10 young adults from at-risk communities to enter its 12-week pre-employment program where they will receive class materials and onsite training from instructors.
- $15,000 to KFACT to support their Lady All-Star Holistic Mentoring program, which prepares at-risk, financially disadvantaged, and underserved girls in the Rockford area to succeed by preparing them for post-secondary education and helping them break the cycle of generational poverty.
- $8,000 to Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries to support its Park Players program, a summer recreational program designed to teach at-risk youth violence prevention skills at Liberty Park in southwest Rockford. Through this program, Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries anticipates hiring 15-18 teens, many for whom this will be their first job, who will model nonviolent conflict resolution skills to approximately 500 children aged 5-10 who attend the Park Players program from area daycare and child welfare agencies, community centers, and Rockford Park District programs.
- $15,000 to Stateline Youth for Christ to support its Juvenile Justice Ministry (JJM), which focuses on mentoring and life skills training and provides activities to youth within juvenile detention centers and upon re-entry.
“SwedishAmerican’s mission is, ‘Through excellence in healthcare and compassionate service, we care for our community,’” says SwedishAmerican Foundation Director Laura Wilkinson. “We care for our community not only by continuing to invest in our hospital, health system, programs, and services but also by investing in not-for-profit organizations who share in our mission and care for our community’s youth and families.”
