SwedishAmerican Adopts New Ultrasound Technology to Detect Lung Cancer at an Earlier Stage
SwedishAmerican, a division of UW Health is pleased to announce it now offers a new piece of technology to help in the fight against lung cancer, a disease that kills more men and women than any other disease. Thy Olympus Radial probe endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) is safe piece of technology that represents an improvement over conventional biopsy methods for lung cancer patients. SwedishAmerican is the only hospital in Rockford utilizing this new lung cancer detection technology.
The Olympus radial EBUS probe provides real-time confirmation of lesion location, which clinical evidence has shown to increase diagnostic yield or establish a correct diagnosis. The technology provides a 360-degree image of the airway wall, allowing it to produce a real-time ultrasound image enabling direct visualization of the exact position of the lesion for sampling. Additionally, it is a more accurate alternative to conventional transbronchial bronchoscope.
SwedishAmerican also uses the superDimension Navigation System by Medtronic, another minimally invasive way to access difficult to reach areas of the lung that a regular bronchoscope cannot get to. By using the patient’s computerized tomography (CT) scan and the superDimension Navigation System software, a pulmonologist can plan more accurate pathways to the targeted area.
“Each year more people die from lung cancer than any other cancer so having technology that accurately diagnoses patients and diagnoses them at an earlier stage is life-changing,” says SwedishAmerican Pulmonologist Dr. Tabassum Nafsi. “Our number one goal is to provide an accurate diagnosis at an earlier stage and this technology does just that, allowing patients to have a better chance at fighting a disease that affects so many.”
Additionally, SwedishAmerican offers the Lung Cancer Clinic in which a multidisciplinary team of specialists offers an efficient, coordinated approach in the evaluation and treatment of this disease. The Lung Clinic strives to be the destination for comprehensive lung cancer care in Northern Illinois by creating a superior patient experience and delivering exceptional treatment outcomes. In 2013, the center received the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for Lung Cancer, one of only nine in the country.
