SwedishAmerican Adopts New State-Of-The-Art 3D Mammography Machine
Breast cancer is one of the most common and the second deadliest type of cancer among women. Early detection can help save lives. But that’s only if women adhere to the recommended screening guidelines. Thanks to SwedishAmerican, a division of UW Health, the hospital now offers a more comfortable and soothing mammography experience, making it less intimidating for women to get their yearly breast health exams.
The hospital recently installed the GE Senographe Pristina 3D mammography machine, a system designed around patient comfort. The machine, made for women by women, has gentle, rounded edges, which reduce discomfort, along with soft armrests, rather than tradition handgrips. In addition, it offers a sensory suite, which includes one large, high-definition monitor in the rooms that display beautiful environmental scenes including a beach, waterfall and a garden. Soothing sounds and fresh aromatherapy scents also fill the room.
“Thanks to the Pristina mammography machine, we can now offer a spa-like experience for our patients who typically have anxiety or fears about having a mammogram,” says SwedishAmerican Breast Health Center Supervisor Adrea Bennett. “This new technology is more comfortable, it’s pretty and most importantly it delivers superior diagnostic accuracy.”
The new machine includes the latest 3D digital mammography technology, also known as digital breast tomosynthesis, which delivers superior diagnostic accuracy at the same low dose as a 2D mammography exam. The positioning and compression are similar to a traditional 2D mammogram but when the Radiologist views the images, they are able to see them in 1mm slices. This helps to eliminate the issue of overlapping dense tissue and lessens the possibility of false positives or unnecessary call-backs. The new digital 3D technology also helps to better define nodules that are present in the breast.
SwedishAmerican’s Pristina 3D mammography machines are located at the SwedishAmerican Breast Health Center, 1340 Charles Street, Suite 201, Rockford and SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere, 1625 S. State Street, Belvidere. For more information or to schedule a mammogram, call (779) 696-7676.
