State Farm Grants $10,000 to SwedishAmerican Safe Kids Winnebago County Coalition

SwedishAmerican Safe Kids Winnebago County Coalition in conjunction with the SwedishAmerican Foundation is excited to announce it recently received a $10,000 State Farm grant to provide more than 200 age and size appropriate car seats to low and moderate income families throughout nine counties in northern Illinois.

Safe Kids Winnebago County, led by SwedishAmerican Hospital, provides dedicated and caring staff, operation support and other resources to assist in achieving one common goal, keeping kids safe. Based on the needs of the community, the coalition implements evidence-based programs, such as car-seat checkups, safety workshops and sports clinics that help parents and caregivers prevent childhood injuries.

In addition, State Farm funding will allow Safe Kids to educate parents regarding the importance of child car safety. Education will focus on the importance of not only using a car seat but ensuring it is the correct size for their children, the necessity of five-point harnesses for children under four years of age, that children under the age of 13 should never be allowed to ride in the front seat, and that all older children and occupants should wear seatbelts, regardless of their age.

“Safe Kids is extremely grateful to State Farm for providing funding for 200 car seats,” says SwedishAmerican Safe Kids Winnebago County Coalition Coordinator Penny Lentz. “Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of unintentional death among children ages 1 to 19. This grant will help us provide age and size appropriate car seats to individuals unable to afford them and provide important education to caregivers.”

State Farm, one of the nation’s largest insurance companies, provides grants across the U.S. and Canada. These grants promote safety, community development and education.

“Building healthy and strong neighborhoods is at the heart of being a Good Neighbor,” says Jim Slaven, Public Affairs at State Farm. “State Farms believes SwedishAmerican Safe Kids has the resources and talent necessary to help keep our kids safe. We are excited to award this grant to a wonderful hospital and organization.”
