Pharmacy
At SwedishAmerican, our 4,800-square-foot pharmacy plays a critical role in the delivery of healthcare services. Accommodating the latest technology, it was designed to promote patient safety and operational efficiency. SwedishAmerican's pharmacy includes these key areas:
Medication Repackaging Area
In this area, medication doses are prepared, repackaged and checked to promote patient safety. Nationwide, SwedishAmerican is among a small number (less than 20%) of hospitals that barcode scan medications prior to patient administration. Each month, our pharmacy repackages and barcodes more than 100,000 doses of medications.
Pharmacy Review Area
This area works to ensure the safest possible environment for our patients. Nearly 5,000 doses of medication are dispensed from this area each day. Each one is reviewed for potential interactions with other medications, food, drinks, and patients conditions; the correct dose, route and rate of administration; side effects; adverse reactions; and less costly alternatives.
Sterile Preparation Area
Medications are prepared in the most sterile environment available to avoid contamination or exposure to patients and staff.
In addition to the main pharmacy at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford, we also offer inpatient pharmacy services at SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere.
