Senior Executive Physician Leadership

Physician leadership defines SwedishAmerican Health System.

From the senior executive physicians leading the System and the practicing physician leaders of SwedishAmerican Medical Group, to the department chairs and committee members of SwedishAmerican Hospital, physicians set the standards of care for our patients and the expectations of practice for our physicians.

Bill Gorski, MD
President and Chief Executive Officer, SwedishAmerican Health System

Dr. Bill Gorski has served as president and CEO of SwedishAmerican Health System since 2001. He practiced at SwedishAmerican Hospital for 21 years while also serving in a variety of leadership roles, including chair of family medicine, vice president of the hospital medical staff, president of SwedishAmerican Medical Group and chief medical officer for SwedishAmerican Health System.

During his tenure, Dr. Gorski has led an award-winning $100 million expansion of the SwedishAmerican campus, including the construction of our state-of-the-art Heart Hospital at SwedishAmerican and the opening of a second hospital, SwedishAmerican Medical Center, in Belvidere, IL. Most recently, he initiated a formal affiliation with University of Wisconsin–Madison and is leading the development and construction of SwedishAmerican’s new comprehensive cancer center in conjunction with the UW Carbone Cancer Center, one of only 40 NCI-accredited comprehensive cancer centers in the nation.

Dr. Gorski received a bachelor’s degree from Kenyon College in Ohio and completed medical school at University of Cincinnati. He came to Rockford in 1977 to complete family medicine training at University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford. Dr. Gorski is a member of the American College of Physician Executives and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Kathleen M. Kelly, MD
Chief Medical Officer and Chief Quality Officer, SwedishAmerican Health System

As CMO and CQO, Dr. Kathleen Kelly is responsible for all aspects of clinical care and quality at SwedishAmerican. She serves as the system and hospital liaison to the medical staff, oversees all clinical hospital departments and directs all quality management and reporting initiatives.

Under Dr. Kelly’s leadership, SwedishAmerican has received numerous quality awards, including Total Benchmark Solutions Top 100 Hospital Quality Award, HealthGrades Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award and J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital Award.

Dr. Kelly completed a bachelor’s degree at State University of New York at Albany and received her medical degree from Albany Medical College in New York. She completed internal medicine residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle and is board certified in internal medicine. Dr. Kelly is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American College of Physician Executives.

Frank Bonelli, MD, PhD
President, SwedishAmerican Hospital Medical Staff

Dr. Frank Bonelli currently serves as president of the SwedishAmerican Hospital medical staff. In this role, he holds an appointment to the health system board of directors and represents over 600 medical and allied health staff members of SwedishAmerican Hospital. Dr. Bonelli also serves as liaison between the medical department chairs of the hospital and senior hospital leadership, and serves as chair and medical director of the Medical Imaging department.

Dr. Bonelli is originally from Barrington, IL, and received his medical degree with a joint PhD in biochemistry from University of Illinois College of Medicine in Urbana, IL. He completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and a fellowship in neuroradiology at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Bonelli is board certified in diagnostic radiology and holds a certificate of advanced qualification in neuroradiology.

Steven Lidvall, MD, MPH
Director of Medical Affairs, SwedishAmerican Hospital

Dr. Steven Lidvall oversees medical staff issues at SwedishAmerican Hospital and SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere, including credentialing, hospital rules and regulations, quality of care and clinical department meetings. He also supervises and serves as liaison to the hospital medicine service, medical education and the family medicine residency program.

Dr. Lidvall earned his medical degree from University of Iowa and completed family medicine residency at University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford. He holds a master of public health from University of Illinois at Chicago and is a member of the American College of Physician Executives. Dr. Lidvall is board certified in family medicine and serves in multiple leadership roles with community health organizations, including the Winnebago County Board of Health, Alignment Rockford and the Rockford Health Council.

Thomas M. Schiller, MD
President, SwedishAmerican Medical Group

Since 2001, Dr. Thomas Schiller has served as president of SwedishAmerican Medical Group, a multi-specialty group serving northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. He represents the interests of 100 employed physicians and 21 midlevel providers practicing within 17 SwedishAmerican Medical Group clinics and SwedishAmerican Hospital.

Dr. Schiller was born and raised in Rockford and graduated from the Rockford Public School Auburn High School Academy Program. He earned his undergraduate degree at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, and received his medical degree from University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago. He completed family medicine training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, and served as chief resident in his final year.

He is board certified by the American Academy of Family Physicians and is a member of the American College of Physician Executives.

Eric Trautmann, MD
Chair, SwedishAmerican Medical Group–Recruitment & Retention Committee

Like Dr. Gorski, Dr. Eric Trautmann first came to Rockford for family medicine residency. He found the community to be very much like his home town of Springfield, Illinois, but loved Rockford’s proximity to Chicago, Madison and Milwaukee.

In his role as chair of the recruitment and retention committee, Dr. Trautmann participates in all SAMG physician interviews. He has been instrumental in developing a number of retention initiatives, including a comprehensive orientation process, group social events and a mentor program to ensure that newly-hired physicians are fully-integrated into SwedishAmerican and the Rockford community.

Dr. Trautmann received his medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, IL, and completed family medicine residency at University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford. He is board certified in family medicine and maintains a full-time practice at SwedishAmerican Medical Group/Midtown.

Allen Williams, MD
Chair, SwedishAmerican Medical Group–Site Committee

Dr. Williams chairs the SAMG site committee which acts as the “senate” of the medical group. The site committee is comprised of one physician representative from each clinic site who collectively review, discuss, and bring consensus to all physician-related policies.

Dr. Williams received his medical degree and completed internal medicine residency at Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, Illinois. He is board certified in internal medicine and is a past president of the SwedishAmerican Medical Staff. He maintains a full-time practice at SwedishAmerican Medical Group/Woodside.

Timothy Flynn, MD
Chair, SwedishAmerican Medical Group - Compensation Committee

Dr. Timothy Flynn leads the SAMG compensation committee in the development, review and revision of policies and procedures regarding all aspects of compensation for employed physicians. Compensation committee initiatives include annual analysis of WRVU production values, pay-for-performance incentives, review of new physician guarantees, etc.

Dr. Flynn is originally from Roscoe, IL. He received his medical degree from Southern Illinois University in Springfield and completed family medicine residency at University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. He is board certified in family medicine and practices at SwedishAmerican Medical Group/Davis Junction.

Peter Phelan, MD
Chair, SwedishAmerican Medical Group – Quality Committee

Dr. Peter Phelan has been employed with SwedishAmerican since 1985, and is one of the first physicians to join SwedishAmerican Medical Group during its inception in 1994. Over the years, he has been very active in leadership, serving as chairman of the department of medicine at SwedishAmerican Hospital and as a member of the SAMG compensation committee and site committee.

As chair of the SAMG quality committee, Dr. Phelan has led the development and implementation of a number of quality measures that are used to assess and improve patient care. Current primary care indicators being measured and reported include HgA1C and LDL testing rates. Dr. Phelan also oversees the Joint Commission readiness process for all SAMG clinic sites.

Dr. Phelan received his medical degree and completed internal medicine residency at Pennsylvania State University in Hershey, PA. He is board certified in internal medicine and practices at SwedishAmerican Medical Group/Woodside.

Richard Deming, MD
Physician Champion, SwedishAmerican Medical Group–Electronic Medical Record

Dr. Richard Deming has lived in Rockford since 1977 but recently realized he is no longer just visiting. He maintained a private practice with Dr. Gorski in Rockford for 14 years before joining SwedishAmerican Medical Group when it began in 1994.

As the physician leader of the electronic medical record team, Dr. Deming coordinates all aspects of implementation and maintenance of our Epic EMR system. He monitors and integrates software upgrades, creates specialty-specific data sets and trains physicians new to SAMG. Dr. Deming also collaborated with the SwedishAmerican Hospital CMIO and information systems team as they prepared for implementation of computerized physician order entry.

Dr. Deming is originally from Wauwatosa, WI, and earned his medical degree at Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He completed family medicine residency at University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford and is board certified in family medicine. Dr. Deming continues to practice at SwedishAmerican Medical Group/Five Points.
