State-of-the-Art Surgical Suites to Open at SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere
October 3, 2011
SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere has responded to the growing demand and need for surgical services in Boone County. After six months of renovation, the center proudly announces the completion of two cutting-edge operating suites specially designed for a broad range of surgical services, including podiatry, gynecology and orthopedic surgeries. The center will open its doors to surgical patients in the fall of 2011.
The $3.6 million, 4,975-square-foot surgical area is located on the first floor of the building and has the latest in high-tech, smart operating room (OR) suites. In addition, the renovated space includes a sterile processing area, two patient bays for pre-surgery preparation and three post-anesthesia care (PACU) units.
“The benefits of new operating rooms are many,” says SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere’s Perioperative Manager Tammy Blackburn. “For one, installing the latest technology brings our facility’s capabilities into the future of surgery. Both of our new surgical suites mirror each other and come standard with Stryker’s SwitchPoint Infinity Control systems, which use touch-screen technology. Their IP video platform makes the OR more accessible for teaching and remote monitoring. In addition, a video integration system gives surgeons instant access to radiology images, lab results and patient information—all at the touch of the screen.”
“The new surgical area will enhance our outpatient surgery services for both our patients and physicians by providing them with the latest advanced technologies and a modern facility,” says Dawna Menke, administrator of SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere. “In addition, we anticipate a number of physicians using our Specialty Clinic that is located within the building, making consultations and follow-up visits extremely convenient for our patients. The community will be well-served by this addition, and we couldn’t be more pleased with it.”
SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new surgical area in conjunction with the Belvidere Chamber of Commerce’s Breakfast Before Business from 7:30 to 9:30 AM on Wednesday, October 5. Area business people will get a behind-the-scenes look at the operating areas, and staff members will be on hand to answer questions and lead tours.
Technologies & Features:
The OR is equipped with Stryker technologies and features:
•Stryker booms, which keep all OR equipment suspended around each surgical bed for easy access and space optimization
•A centralized computer system that controls all of the equipment including lighting within the operating room from a central control desk, allowing staff to activate or adjust devices from 10-15 ft. away
•Two 26" Stryker digital high-definition flat monitors that allow surgical teams to see the surgical field from anywhere in the operating room
•High-definition video resolution allows for crisp, clear images showing intricate detail
•A 46" wall-mounted, high-definition LCD monitor
•LED surgical lights that stay cool without sacrificing brightness and eliminate potentially harmful ultraviolet and infrared rays. A reflector keeps the surgical field shadow-free. The technology is greener because LED light bulbs rarely need to be replaced and disposed, decreasing environmental waste.
•A high-definition camera installed in one of the LED surgical lights to allow for remote physician teaching, along with connectivity to other networked locations, such as conference rooms, auditoriums, pathology, radiology, surgeons’ offices and other off-site locations
•New monitoring equipment in the pre- and post-operative areas
