SwedishAmerican BetterLife Wellness to Host Public Open House at I.D. Pennock Family YMCA
February 12, 2014
BetterLife Wellness, a new SwedishAmerican medical wellness center located within the I.D. Pennock Family YMCA in downtown Rockford, is celebrating its grand opening.
A private ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, February 19, for members of the media, contractors, YMCA staff members, SwedishAmerican management and employees.
A public open house will follow the ribbon-cutting from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. In addition to touring the new facility, the public will be able to enjoy healthy refreshments, receive a chair massage and participate in giveaways and drawings for prizes.
The center offers a variety of services for members and the general public, including:
• Wellness educational programs, classes and support groups
• Screenings and health risk assessments
• Personal health coaching
• Weight management services
• Therapeutic massages
• Nutrition and healthy cooking classes
• Freedom from Smoking classes
• Relaxation and stress management education
• Young Hearts for Life, cardiac screening partnership with Midwest Heart Specialists Foundation
• Preventive health education and services, such as flu shots
All retail services are available to the general public. BetterLife members will have priority access and receive a 15 percent discount for those services, plus the benefit of some exclusive free classes and coaching. BetterLife Wellness membership can be added to any current YMCA membership for an additional monthly fee. However, even those who are not Y members can still join BetterLife independently of the Y.
“BetterLife expands our capacity to help people of all ages, physical abilities and limitations lead healthier lives,” says Kathleen Kelly, MD, SwedishAmerican Health System's Chief Clinical Integration Officer. “Our unique holistic health experience and expertise will be incorporated into the individualized wellness prescriptions and coaching offered to our participants. The powerful combination of active medical oversight; experienced and credentialed staff; and the utilization of an individual’s personal health status are intended to reduce health risks, improve wellbeing and bring a measureable impact upon improving the overall health of our community.”
In addition to BetterLife Wellness, SwedishAmerican and the YMCA will offer integrated programming in other areas, including corporate wellness. Collaborative efforts between SwedishAmerican and the YMCA of Rock River Valley have been in place for many years. In 2007, SwedishAmerican established the Orthopedic & Sports Therapy Center, which offers physical therapy for rehabilitation after injury, illness and surgery within the Northeast Family YMCA. SwedishAmerican physicians also provide periodic educational talks to YMCA members on an ongoing basis.
“Building a healthy community doesn’t happen overnight,” says Mike Brown, CEO and President, YMCA of Rock River Valley. “It takes quality programs and services from businesses and organizations alike. It takes innovative thinking and combined efforts. BetterLife Wellness and the Y will help our community keep healthy habits now and pass those habits to future generations.”
