New SwedishAmerican Program Helps Remove Financial Obstacles for Women in Need of Screening Mammograms—Health System Encourages the Community to Consider “Giving the Gift of a Mammogram” This Holiday Season.

December 7, 2012

The SwedishAmerican Center For Women recently established Project F.A.M.E. (Funding and Advocacy for Mammography Exams) to help provide routine screening mammograms to women who are unable to afford them. The program will be supported by the center's fundraising efforts, including its annual Breast Cancer Raffle Baskets, as well as private donations.

Project F.A.M.E. was developed in response to a pressing local health need. Currently, more than 300 area women are on a waiting list to receive a mammogram through a grant administered by the Winnebago County Health Department’s IBCCP (Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program). Applications are assessed, and women with symptoms are given first priority. Others are placed on the waiting list. State funding for this important program has decreased, and an additional 17 percent funding reduction is anticipated in 2013. Through Project F.A.M.E., SwedishAmerican hopes to reduce the size of the IBCCP’s waiting list.

"We follow the American Cancer Society’s golden rule of an annual mammogram for women age 40 and over," says SwedishAmerican Center for Women Supervisor Sonya Fogal. "During this holiday season, we encourage the community to consider ‘giving the gift of a mammogram’ by making a donation to Project F.A.M.E., which could potentially save someone's life!"

Project F.A.M.E. would like to thank two generous donors who helped the initiative get off to a strong start. In October funding for 40 screening mammograms was received from a team led by community breast cancer advocate Cindy Genrich, in connection with the Styling for Pink fashion show. In November students from the local Educators of Beauty College contributed nearly $600, following a month-long breast cancer awareness fundraising project in October.
