SwedishAmerican Proposed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Approved by State Board

June 13, 2017

SwedishAmerican, a division of UW Health, is pleased to announce it received approval for its Certificate of Exemption (COE) from the Chairwoman of the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board to establish a ten bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The NICU approval allows SwedishAmerican to apply to the Illinois Department of Public Health for Level III neo-natal designation which is the highest level of neo-natal care currently recognized by the State. The proposed Level III NICU is expected to open in 2019 and eventually will be relocated to a new four-story state-of-the-art women’s and children’s tower, located on the hospital campus in downtown Rockford. The tower is scheduled to be completed in 2020.

SwedishAmerican’s Level III NICU will feature ten beds, providing care for babies born at less than 32 weeks gestation as well as babies born with critical illness at all gestational ages. The Level III NICU will be staffed 24-hours-a-day by a multidisciplinary team of physicians from both SwedishAmerican and the nationally-rated University of Wisconsin’s American Family Children’s Hospital.

“The Level III NICU will allow our more than 2,500 births every year to receive an even higher level of care at SwedishAmerican,” says President & CEO Dr. Bill Gorski. “In-house specialist physicians from our University of Wisconsin’s American Family Children’s Hospital will serve on-site, here in Rockford, providing optimal care for babies along with healing comfort and convenience for mothers and families. We are extremely pleased to offer this specialized care to our patients and the community.”

Highly trained physicians, neonatal nurse practitioners, experienced RNs, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other specialists will staff the unit. As a Level III NICU, SwedishAmerican will provide this highest level category of care in Illinois to babies and mothers.

“As a provider, I form a relationship with my patients and when their baby is born early or has a complication, I am extremely pleased to know that we can provide that high-quality care from the beginning of their pregnancy until after their baby is born,” says SwedishAmerican OB/GYN Department Chairman and Medical Director Dr. William K. Cunningham. “Having a Level III NICU allows us to provide babies with the highest level of care at the moment it is needed.”

The Level III NICU is part of SwedishAmerican’s $130 million expansion project announced in April. The project includes the construction of a new state-of-the-art women’s and children’s tower; modernizations and expansions in our emergency department, surgical area and catheterization labs; expansion of our mental health unit and the creation all private in-patient rooms throughout the existing hospital. Approximately 600 union labor construction jobs and dozens of new permanent healthcare jobs will be created.
