State Street Mile Announces New Challenge to Benefit Area High Schools

May 13, 2014

The 30th Annual State Street Mile, presented by SwedishAmerican Health System, will be held Saturday, August 2 in downtown Rockford. In honor of its 30th year, SwedishAmerican Health System and the State Street Mile committee have teamed up to create the $1,000 High School Challenge for public and private high schools in the area.

The High School Challenge encourages students, staff and faculty to participate in this year’s State Street Mile. The high school that has the most registered and participating students and faculty will receive $1,000 for their athletic department. Each registrant will simply designate their school and grade level, or faculty/staff position on the registration form. On race day, students and faculty are encouraged to wear school colors and apparel.

“We are excited to host the 30th annual State Street Mile and introduce the first ever High School Challenge,” says Mark Hepworth, State Street Mile co-chair. “We want to encourage health and wellness within our high schools and help assist local high school athletic departments. Additionally, this is just one more way we are transforming our city into a healthier place to live, work and play.”

State Street Mile features five individual races including a Masters Competitions for men and women 40 years and older; Ben Newson Jr. run for both boys and girls K-12; an Open Run; and Kids’ Fun Run. A portion of the run proceeds will benefit the Rockford Wildcats and the Boys & Girls Club of Rockford.
