SwedishAmerican Hosting Two Holiday Grief Programs
November 22, 2013
For individuals who are grieving the death of a loved one, the approaching holiday season can be especially difficult. The sights and sounds of the season can be a reminder of a holiday that has been forever changed by the loss of a loved one. With this in mind, SwedishAmerican's Pastoral Care department is sponsoring two free community programs:
Grief: The Unwanted Holiday Guest (December 4)
On Wednesday, December 4, Rev. Norm Shirk, LCPC, director of pastoral care at SwedishAmerican Health System, will present: "Grief: The Unwanted Holiday Guest -- How to Cope with the Special Days When You've Lost Someone You Love." The event will be held at the Northeast YMCA, 8451 Orth Rd. in Loves Park, at 11 AM. Registration is not required.
Coping with the Holidays (December 5)
On Thursday, December 5, SwedishAmerican will host “Coping with the Holidays.” Melinda Hagerman of Fitzgerald Funeral Home will discuss grief and its impact during the holiday season, and provide practical suggestions for coping with the stress of holiday grief. Each participating family will receive a free copy of the book, How Will I Get Through the Holidays? by James E. Miller. This event will take place at both noon and 6:30 PM within SwedishAmerican Hospital's Carlson Chapel (near the conference center on the first floor). There is no charge to attend, but attendees are asked to register with the Pastoral Care office at (815) 489-4620. Following the evening presentation, refreshments will be served.
