SwedishAmerican Medical Group/Lundholm Orthopedics Celebrates 100 Years
July 23, 2013
SwedishAmerican Medical Group is pleased to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lundholm Orthopedics. The clinic traces its origins back to 1913, when Dr. Joseph S. Lundholm established his own practice in Rockford at age 22. With only a hand-made exam table and desk, he joined the staff at SwedishAmerican Hospital shortly after it opened.
An early innovator in orthopedics, Dr. Lundholm invented a special screw to join broken hip bones and speed up recovery times. The Lundholm Surgical Lag Screw was an improvement on earlier practices, in which doctors nailed broken hips back together. Dr. Lundholm perfected his special hip screw in 1949 and received a patent for it in 1951. He had a local metalworking company make the screws and installation tools and sold them through the Rockford Surgical Equipment Company. The device eventually became an industry standard.
The clinic adopted the name Lundholm Surgical Group in 1954, and was acquired by SwedishAmerican Medical Group in February of 2011. Today, SwedishAmerican's board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic physicians include:
•Oscar Anton, MD, FAAOS
•Thomas Danaher, MD, FAAOS
•William Dannenmaier, MD, FAAOS
•Steven Milos, MD, FAAOS
•Scott Nyquist, MD, FAAOS
Together, they treat patients of all ages with problems relating to accidents, work-related injuries, sports injuries and degenerative arthritis, utilizing the most advanced surgical techniques.
SAMG/Lundholm Orthopedics is located on the first floor of the Renaissance Pavilion, 1340 Charles Street, on SwedishAmerican Hospital’s main campus. Patients can make an appointment by calling (815) 397-6723.
