The IHSA has cleared high school runners to participate in the 26th annual SwedishAmerican State Street Mile. While the Illinois high school fall sports training schedule begins on August 11th, under IHSA bylaws there is a five-day grace period during which runners can participate in non-school practice and competition in their sport without jeopardizing their eligibility. More information is available here.

The Rockford Wildcats is a youth cross crountry team designed to let kids have fun while learning about running. A portion of this year's race proceeds will be donated to the wildcats.

Dick Berry
Dick Berry started the State Street Mile in 1985, with a goal of having the first sub-4- minute road race in Illinois. Berry started the race with two heats and no age group awards. All finishers received a small trophy, and there was a drawing for door prizes. The top door prize was a mountain bike.

Before the second year of the Mile, Dick was killed by a drunk driver while jogging. In 1990 an elite field was put together, and Dick's dream was finally realized. Not only one, but five runners ran under 4 minutes. Dick was no doubt smiling that night.
Ben Newson Jr.
A 1967 West High School graduate, Ben Newson was a coach in the Rockford area for more than 20 years, serving as head cross-country coach and assistant track coach at Auburn High School. In 1990 Ben was named coach of the year for cross-country. Winning was not the most important thing to him.

Teamwork and individual skills produced athletes who could be proud of what they accomplished on and off the field. In Ben's eyes, everyone was a winner; even if you were the last one to finish the race. Mr. Newson lost his life to cancer on March 18, 1993.
